  7. Heather Sorenson

Heather is a trusted advocate who is deeply committed to helping Indigenous communities find practical solutions that protect their rights and advance their interests and jurisdiction. As an Indigenous lawyer with extensive experience guiding clients through Indigenous-related issues in major natural resource and infrastructure projects, she brings a unique and valuable perspective to her practice. Heather provides impactful legal counsel by drawing on both her personal experience and professional background, and is driven by a strong commitment to building strong, collaborative relationships that support meaningful, long-term change.

Heather is a member of the firm's Indigenous Practice Group. She is also a member of the firm's Environmental Law and Energy Groups. Heather works closely with Indigenous communities and project proponents across Canada, providing legal support on a wide range of matters involving Indigenous rights, governance and natural resource development. She regularly advises Indigenous governments on the development of their laws, including those created pursuant to An Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit and Métis Children, Youth and Families (C-92). Heather also supports clients through project-related negotiations such as Impact Benefit Agreements (IBAs) and Indigenous equity ownership of major projects.

Heather's practice also encompasses environmental approvals, permitting and regulatory compliance, with a focus on the energy, mining and natural resource sectors. She advises on Indigenous-related legal obligations, including consultation and accommodation, free, prior and informed consent (FPIC), on-reserve development, procurement and relationship planning.

Heather is Cree from the Michel First Nation.
