First Waste Transload Inc. Transports Waste By Rail
April 30, 2026
A&B assisted First Waste Transload Inc. (FWTI) in preparing, filing and negotiating the terms of a Certificate of Approval which was issued by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment on March 14, 2008. This certificate permits FWTI to ship 365,000 tonnes per year of construction and demolition waste by rail car from its new purpose built facility in Vaughan.
Transporting the waste by rail to landfills in the United States removes over 12,000 long haul trucks from the 401 and other Ontario highways. According to FWTI, this will greatly reduce wear and tear to our roads and line-ups at border crossings, and result in significantly fewer CO2 emissions.
With more facilities in the planning stages, if FWTI ships all of the estimated 7 million tonnes of construction and demolition waste generated by the GTA by rail, it will remove an estimated 210,000 long haul trucks from our highways annually.
The A&B team consisted of Dennis O'Leary, Joel Rose, Louis Amato-Gauci and Andrew Biderman.
